Montgomery Jubilee Runs

The Montgomery Jubilee Runs begin and end at historic Old Alabama Town in Montgomery, Alabama. The event features an 8K race on a USATF-certified course and the Peggy Lanier 2-Mile run/walk. Organized by the River Region Runners' Club and held in May, the 8K also serves as the Road Runners Club of America’s Alabama 8K State Championship. This designation attracts competitive racers alongside walkers and local participants. Both races use chip timing, with awards presented across numerous age groups, from young children to participants in their seventies. The routes traverse historic downtown Montgomery and adjacent neighborhoods before descending back into Old Alabama Town for the finish. Participants travel from the River Region, other Alabama areas, and beyond. Previous Jubilee Runs have resulted in several state running records. The 2-mile race commemorates Peggy McLendon Lanier, adding a community focus to the day alongside the championship event. Now in its 47th year, the series raises funds for the Alabama Sheriffs Youth Ranches.

Glassner Autumn Challenge

The Glassner Autumn Challenge is a century ride held in Montgomery, Alabama, each fall by the Montgomery Bicycle Club. The primary long route is the Capital City 100. Shorter options include the Mad Metric, Fabulous Fifties, Smell the Roses, Cruisin' in the City, and Historic Neighborhood Ramble, offering participants multiple ways to engage in the day's events. The ride commemorates Dr. Jim Glassner, a dedicated cyclist, MBC member, and long-time advocate for central Alabama cycling, who died in a cycling accident. The century ride was renamed in his honor and traces its origins to the 1980s. The event is now part of the Backroads "Capital City" Cycling Safety Party Ride, incorporating cycling safety and awareness throughout the day. This includes Glassner Radio, which provides rider information, safety messages, and music prior to the start.

Turkey Burner

Turkey Burner is a trail race held after Thanksgiving at Black Mountain Ranch Community Park in San Diego. The event includes half marathon, 10K, and 5K distances, all starting and finishing at the park. It is part of the Endurance Race Series’ Sunshine Series, and the organizers consider it the most technical trail event in that series. The half marathon presents the primary challenge: a course entirely on dirt trails with approximately 2,000 feet of elevation gain. This makes it a more demanding run than a simple holiday outing, though the event is open to all participants, from novice trail runners to seasoned competitors. The name reflects the post-Thanksgiving timing, but the course requires genuine climbing and trail skill following the holiday meal.

About cycling & running in Montgomery

Montgomery Training Notes

Running: Locals run Montgomery through Lagoon Park, Blount Cultural Park, historic downtown, and the surrounding neighborhoods when they want easy miles without much fuss. They run it rain or shine. The Montgomery Jubilee Runs serve as a proper anchor event, and the Montgomery Half Marathon and 5K gives base miles a clear target. The Wildcat Summer Cup keeps summer sharp with hand-timed 5Ks and a little doughnut energy.

Cycling: Locals ride a park-heavy mix first, with the Riverfront Greenway and Lagoon Park Trail handling easy spins and Z2 days. Montgomery Bicycle Club anchors the cycling side, with a Ride With GPS Club Account, a Strava Club, and the Glassner Autumn Challenge on the calendar. The Swayback Bridge Trail and River Region Trails bring the bigger effort when singletrack legs need work. Woodley Road brings shade, fresh pavement, and hills, while the Vetsulin Loop stacks 8 climbs into 12 miles. The Vetsulin Loop runs 9 miles and climbs 1,697 feet.

Season: Spring and Autumn feel like the money months, because Montgomery lets runners and riders stack intervals, long runs, and gran fondo prep without fighting the worst heat. Montgomery hits 32°C on 86 days per year, so locals move early, hydrate hard, and keep some sessions honest. Montgomery stays 8°C or higher most of the year, so Z2 can feel like work. 4 days per year.
