MEMORIAL MILE

The Noel J Taylor Memorial Mile is a one-mile Group One harness race for pacing horses at Alexandra Park in Auckland, New Zealand. Horses compete 1609 metres on a dirt, right-handed oval, with the event positioned near the top tier of New Zealand standardbred racing. It typically attracts four-year-old pacers, aligning with the race’s traditional identity, although entry rules have been broadened on occasion. Most refer to it simply as the Noel Taylor Mile or the Taylor Mile. The race originated in the 1980s and occurs one week before the New Zealand Messenger, serving as both a significant goal and a rigorous test before another key Auckland event. It has not consistently been a pure mile; for a period, it was contested over 1700 metres. A notable recent occurrence involved a $151 outsider winning with a junior driver, a result that underscores the unpredictable nature of a short, high-class harness race.

Bear Lake Triathlon

The Bear Lake Triathlon kicks off the West Michigan triathlon season in North Muskegon, featuring Sprint and Olympic distances. The Sprint consists of a 750m swim, 20K bike, and 5K run. The Olympic race doubles these distances to a 1500m swim, 40K bike, and 10K run. Participants can also opt for a duathlon, relay, or aquabike, accommodating both the full swim-bike-run format and those wishing to skip one discipline. The course structure remains consistent across all event types, simplifying the race for teams and individuals. Packet pickup is available Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning before the race; late registration is not permitted on race day. Athletes must collect their race bags before racking bikes, and the transition area closes prior to the start. The morning program includes a pre-race briefing and the National Anthem. The event highlights its local roots with Bear Lake Tavern, a North Muskegon establishment founded in the early 1900s. Finishers receive medals, annual participant shirts, and food at the finish line. Nearby beaches offer a practical amenity for accompanying families.

Crusader Cross Country Classic

Runners start and finish on the cinder track inside Monsignor Kehren Stadium at Muskegon Catholic Central, then race a flat 5K around the school’s athletic fields and grounds. The morning schedule includes separate high school boys and girls races before the Alumni & Community Race, which is open to anyone. The course is built for fast running and easy watching, with spectators able to follow the action from the stadium area and around the school grounds. Race proceeds support MCC’s cross country and track and field programs, chip timing is handled by MI Time Race Management, and the stadium setup includes restrooms, packet pickup, and an athletic trainer near the finish.

About cycling & running in Muskegon

Muskegon-Norton Shores Training Notes

Running: Locals run the lakefront when they want steady Z2 and open air, with Pere Marquette Beach and Muskegon Lake setting the rhythm. Run Muskegon meets every Wednesday at Pigeon Hill Brewing Company, with announcements at 6:20 pm and the run, jog, or walk at 6:30 pm. New runners arrive by 6:15 pm for the waiver, and all paces are welcome. The lakefront route covers 72 km with +103 m gain. Trinity Health Seaway Run, Run For Wings 5K, Shamrock Shuffle 5k, and Turkey Trot 5k keep the calendar honest.

Cycling: Locals ride Norton Shores with a simple coastal mix of base miles, short gravel, and fast flat stretches. Norton Shores has 20 tracked cycling routes totaling 285 km, so weekday spins and weekend gran fondo efforts both fit. The shortest route runs 2 mi for a little bite. The shortest route runs 7 km with 44 m ascent and 43 m descent. The climbs sit where the gain shows up, with Trial + Hill, Pigeon Hill, and W Mt Garfield Rd doing the work.

Season: June, July, August, and September feel like the clean block for both sports. Summer puts locals on beach runs, lakefront miles, Arts and Dash 5K, and the Foreshore Adventure Run at Pere Marquette Beach. Riders use the longer Norton Shores routes for Z2 and hit Martin Road or Wood Rd when gravel sounds better than pavement. Winter changes the kit, not the habit. Ali prefers cold weather over extreme heat, and Run Muskegon keeps March and Thanksgiving moving with the Shamrock Shuffle 5k and Turkey Trot 5k.
