About Marathon races in Raleigh

Raleigh Base Miles

Raleigh hosts 1 Marathon races in 2026 within 80 km of the city centre — upcoming dates, recurring series, and other races nearby, all in one place.

Locals build easy miles on the Raleigh Greenway System, which gives runners over 100 miles of paved and unpaved trails. 5 points rolls past beautiful houses before Glenwood South brings the busy city feel. Meredith College routes hit Hillsborough, Ridge Road, and the Art Museum when you want steady hills instead of flat Z2. Crabtree Creek Trail works for 6 to 9 mile runs, and the Neuse River Greenway stretches over 30 miles to Falls Lake Dam. Tap Yard Run Club meets every Thursday at 6pm with 3, 4, and 6 mile routes. The Breakfast Club Runners and R&D Brewing Run Club keep the week moving. Race 13.1 Raleigh Spring Half Marathon, City of Oaks Marathon, Raleigh Turkey Trot, Day of the Dead 5k & Street Festival, and Umstead 100 are the anchor events.

Riders start on greenways because the greenways are nicer than roads, especially for base miles. Neuse River Trail gives you long paved rhythm, and Williamson Preserve adds packed gravel when the legs want something rougher. Umstead State Park has roads and trails, and Umstead is a world unto itself. Raleigh Gyros Cycling Club runs rides for all skill levels, and Oaks and Spokes, Triangle Off Road Cyclists, and Crank Arm Brewing Events, Rides, Runs & More also organize group rides. GRIT Race gives the gravel crowd an anchor event. The Neuse River Greenway stays fairly flat north from Anderson Point Park, and the south side gets a bit hilly. Raleigh’s real climbing comes from long gentle rollers, Art Museum work, Ridge Road, and Umstead efforts.

September and October feel like prime time for runners and riders who want clean workouts without fighting the heat. March through May also works well for intervals, long runs, gran fondo prep, and steady Z2. 1°C. Summer averages 2°C above comfortable, so locals go early, chase shade on the American Tobacco Trail, and carry bottles on rides. 7°C. 7 days fail to rise above freezing, so training keeps going with layers and shorter starts.
