Firecracker 50

The Firecracker 50 is a 50-mile mountain bike race held annually in Breckenridge, Colorado, on Independence Day. As the original 50-mile MTB race, it precedes Breckenridge's 4th of July parade and holiday festivities, with participants then setting off on local single-track. The rider limit is 750, creating a significant mountain bike event atmosphere without the scale of an unlimited mass start. The course follows a revised route on area trails, featuring aid stations stocked four times per lap. Riders receive practical support at Carter Park, which offers complimentary bike and bag check, a post-race meal, and bike wash as part of the entry fee. The entry package also includes MTB socks and an event shirt, details that align with the race's traditional holiday feel.

About cycling & running in State College

Happy Valley Training Notes

Running: Locals run campus when they want easy base miles and clean sidewalks. Penn State’s Beaver Stadium Loop passes The Lion Shrine, Old Main, the HUB Lawn, the Creamery, and Beaver Stadium. Nittany Valley Running Club keeps the race board, routes, training chatter, and group options moving. Blue Course Drive gives over 4 miles between Whitehall Road and North Atherton Street. Walnut Springs and Lederer Park work when you want creek-side Z2. Mount Nittany Marathon anchors the long stuff. Fall Feet 5k, Pride 5k - Love On Display, First Night Resolution Run 5K, Nittany Valley Half-Marathon, and NVRC Arts Festival Races keep the calendar honest.

Cycling: Locals ride out of State College for rolling farmland, forest roads, and climbing. State College Cycling Club gives riders a first club ride as a guest before membership. Airport Loop runs 13 miles and gains 700 feet, so it works for easy endurance. Black Moshannon route runs 42 miles and gains 4,000 feet, so your legs might be sore for a few days afterward. Llama Loop runs 35 miles and gains 1,200 feet. The short loop runs 8 km and gains 713 m. Central Cycling Classic and Happy Valley Preview Ride feel like the anchor days. Bald Eagle Mountain, the west-side sandstone ridges, and Black Moshannon hold the climbs.

Season: Spring and summer are the best months because Walnut Springs has that creek beside it and locals can dip their feet after a run. Summer gives State College milder heat than much of Pennsylvania, so base miles, intervals, gravel days, and long Z2 rides stay realistic. Students thin out in summer, and sidewalks get easier to navigate. Winter changes the feel fast because the surrounding mountains bring significantly lower temperatures. Locals still use campus, Blue Course, the rail trail, and the club calendar, but winter makes both running and riding more deliberate. Cyclocross legs and gravel patience help when Happy Valley turns cold.
