"LOOP THE LAKE" The Great New York State Marathon Weekend

On the first Sunday of November, the New York City Marathon covers a 26.2-mile course through all five boroughs. The race, currently branded as the TCS New York City Marathon, is organized by New York Road Runners and is part of the Abbott World Marathon Majors. It attracts professional runners, club runners, charity teams, and amateurs globally, with recent editions seeing over 59,000 finishers from more than 200,000 applications. Securing a spot is a challenge: most entries are awarded via lottery across New York metro, national, and international pools. Guaranteed entry is available through NYRR’s 9+1 program, charity fundraising, time qualifying, philanthropic membership, or by finishing the race 15 or more times previously. The event originated as a smaller race within Central Park, organized by Fred Lebow and Vincent Chiappetta, starting with 127 participants, approximately 100 spectators, and 55 finishers. Women were permitted from the outset, though their results were not initially official, and Nina Kuscsik was the sole female participant in that inaugural field.

Le Moyne College Dolphin Dash

The Le Moyne College Dolphin Dash is a campus 5K run/walk and one-mile walk in Syracuse, New York, with the live start and finish at the Niland Athletics Complex and Dwyer Center for Health and Wellness on Salt Springs Road. The 5K is a timed 3.1-mile event, while the one-mile walk is untimed, making the day open to runners, walkers, students, alumni, and local supporters. It is held in late September, with a virtual 5K option available for people who want to participate on their own schedule. The event supports student scholarships at Le Moyne College, so the race is tied directly to the school rather than being just another community 5K. People can register as individuals or teams, and the pricing keeps the short walk especially accessible. Students, active duty and retired military, and members of several regional running clubs get a registration discount, including Checkers AC, Genesee Valley Harriers, Lake Effect Run Club, Syracuse Chargers Track Club, and Finger Lakes Runners Club. Registration is online only through race time, with no paper applications or race-day payment by cash or card.

About cycling & running in Syracuse

Syracuse Base Miles

Running: Locals run Onondaga Lake Park for steady Z2, West Shore Trail markers, and lake views. You can run 5 miles from the Long Branch Road side in Liverpool, and Lakeland Trail gives softer dirt or stone dust when legs need it. Thornden Park, Burnet Park, Onondaga Park, Kirk Park, and Sunnycrest Park keep daily loops close to town. Highland Forest County Park gives over 20 miles of trails when runners want shade, rollers, and a tougher day. Lake Effect Run Club meets Wednesday at 5:30pm and Saturday at 8am. Paige's Butterfly Run, Tipperary Hill Shamrock Run, Syracuse Half Marathon, and Empire State Marathon anchor the calendar.

Cycling: Locals ride the Erie Canalway Trail, Onondaga Creekwalk, and Onondaga Lake Park when they want flat base miles. Onondaga Cycling Club has been active since 1972, and the club keeps Tuesday Slow N' Easy Rides, Tuesday Time Trials, Wednesday Rides, Thursday Slow N' Easy Rides, Friday Morning Rides, and weekend rides moving. Green Lakes Loop is 5 km with 210 m of elevation gain. Old Erie Canal Trail-Green Lakes to Canastota gives riders 41 km with 77 m of elevation gain. Jim's Hilly Western Ride, 315/Salty Chimp, The Skyline Drive, and Limeledge-Skaneateles-Otisco Loop point climbers south and west.

Season: Summer months make Syracuse feel easy for both sports. Onondaga Lake Parkway closes to cars for several hours on Sundays during summer, and locals use it for walking, running, biking, and rollerblading without overthinking the route. The West Shore Trail stays paved, wide, and good for intervals, while the Erie Canal path and Empire Trail in Camillus can bring gravel sections into the ride. Winter changes the rhythm fast. Syracuse gets the most annual average snow of any United States metro area, so runners adjust routes and cyclists move Tuesday nights to OCC Zwift rides from November through March.
