Bayshore Marathon

The Bayshore Marathon, organized by the Traverse City Track Club, offers marathon, half marathon, and 10K races in Traverse City, Michigan, on a May morning. The half marathon follows a point-to-point route: participants take shuttles from Traverse City Central High School to the start on Devil’s Dive Road, finishing on the high school track. The half marathon begins with a steep mile-long ascent of approximately 225 feet. After Bluff Road, the course becomes significantly flatter, leading back toward Traverse City. The route includes Seven Hills Road, Center Road, Blue Water Road, Bluff Road, and East Shore Drive, merging with the marathon course for the final stretch. The event has a large but limited field. Age-group awards are given to the top three finishers based on chip time. Prize money is available for overall, masters, and non-binary winners, with an additional award for breaking the half marathon course record. All finishers receive a medal, bib, and a short-sleeve tech shirt. Registration is not available on race day, and access to the start line is managed via shuttle or limited paid parking.

Traverse City Trail Running Festival

The Traverse City Trail Running Festival is an off-road race weekend held at Timber Ridge RV & Recreation Resort in Traverse City, Michigan. It begins Friday evening with a 5K and a two-person 10K relay. Saturday features longer races: individual 10K, 25K, 50K, 75K, and 100K, plus a 100K relay. All races start and finish at Timber Ridge, using Pere Marquette Forest trails. The routes include narrow singletrack and wider doubletrack, accommodating short-distance trail runners, relay teams, and ultrarunners. The longer individual races are open to runners ages 12 and up, with charity bibs available for the 25K through 100K distances. Post-race, participants can enjoy snacks, beverages, free beer, fire pits, and yard games as other racers finish.

About cycling & running in Traverse City

Traverse City Training Notes

Running: Locals run the Boardman Lake Trail when they want a clean 4-mile loop with minimal street crossings. The main loop is 4 miles, and side trails can stretch the day up to four miles. The Boardman River Trail supports out-and-backs up to 10 miles and beyond when Z2 needs dirt and shade. East Shore Running Club meets Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays for about six miles, with coffee after some runs. Traverse City Track Club keeps the calendar full. Bayshore Marathon and Traverse City Trail Running Festival are the anchor events.

Cycling: Cherry Capital Cycling Club riders know the Old Mission Peninsula Loop as a club favorite with water views of both East and West Bays. Old Mission Peninsula carries the climbs, the orchard rollers, and the base miles that make this place feel coastal but punchy. The climbs hit 523 m over 2 km. The climbs rack up 700 m of elevation over 4 km. VASA Pathway brings singletrack, and the Blood route keeps gravel folks honest. Tour de TART is the easy anchor ride.

Season: Traverse City feels best in warm, mild summer, when locals stack intervals, long rides, and Wednesday evening Traverse City Track Club Summer Series races. The National Cherry Festival brings the city a busy July feel, and Old Mission Peninsula makes summer rides about cherries, vineyards, water views, and the Old Mission General Store ice cream stop. Winter changes the whole rhythm. Lake-effect snow drives much of the annual total, which averages around 80 inches or 203 cm, and snowfall periods typically last from November to April, so runners accept icy roads and cyclists shift toward Vasa Winter Loop plus Yeti's Revenge.
