At Austria Backyard Ultra in Kirchdorf/Tyrol, runners start a 6.706 km loop every hour, continuing until one competitor remains. The event begins on a Saturday morning in September, adhering to the established Backyard Ultra format: complete the loop within the hour, return to the start, and depart again on the next signal. No late starts are permitted, and there is no predetermined finish distance.
The loop is flat, featuring only 9 meters of elevation gain, and follows the Großache river with views of the Kaisergebirge. Completing seven laps surpasses marathon distance, fifteen laps reach 100 km, and twenty-four laps cover 100 miles. This straightforward format evolves into a demanding test of endurance, pacing, and the ability to manage fatigue. The competition welcomes both recreational participants and elite ultrarunners, and the Austria Backyard Ultra Team Challenge is also part of the event.
