Within a national forest, this race follows a "mountain bike course in national forest" route after dark, conveying its essential character. Now in its 5th year, it offers the atmosphere of a practical trail run instead of a refined road competition: laps, dirt, trees, and the focused effort required to maintain composure when your headlamp beam is your sole illumination.
For intermediate and advanced runners, its appeal lies in using it to "step up for big races," particularly as night practice before more demanding trail objectives. Beginners are also welcome; the attraction is the unusual, elemental "non-daily feeling in the dark night," where standard running exertion becomes somewhat more adventurous. Anticipate a crowd focused on the course, participants assessing their legs, lights, pacing, and resolve on repeated circuits through the woods.
