The Kamaishi Sennin Pass Marathon is a steep autumn road race held at the former Kamaishi Mine Office in Kamaishi City's coastal region. The pass course ascends and descends approximately 400 metres, with an average gradient near 5%, making it feel more like a mountain-road challenge than a flat city race. Participants can choose between a 17.2 km pass course and a 10 km course, both starting and finishing at the old mine office. Food trucks and local Kamaishi hospitality are available on race day.
The longer route crosses Koshimachi Ohashi, descends towards Omatsu, then ascends towards the Kamaishi-side entrance of the Sennin Tunnel near the Tono City border before returning to the mine office. Runners face their toughest challenge after an initial downhill: the road turns upward past Omatsu, goes through Ohashi Tunnel, and grows steeper approaching Sennin Tunnel. The field has ranged from high-school age to 80 years old, with participants from Japan and overseas. Spectators line the route, cheering both the long climb and the quick downhill sections. The race began in 2010, was paused during the pandemic, and resumed after a four-year hiatus, with a course designed around Sennin Pass, the Kamaishi River, and the autumn foliage visible from the mountain road.
