The Yajima Cup Mt. Chokai Bicycle Classic takes riders up an 1,100-meter climb starting at the base of Mt. Chokai in Yajima Town, Yurihonjo City, Akita Prefecture. This two-day summer cycling event features individual time trials on Saturday and the primary hill climb on Sunday. The first stage includes an 8 km time trial on a gently rolling course, along with a shorter 3.3 km time trial for elementary school students.
The main race covers approximately 26-27 km and ascends 1,100 meters, ranking it among Japan's most significant hill climbs for vertical gain. Participants travel from all over Japan. The course is known among competitors for its extreme difficulty, featuring consistent steep sections that challenge even committed cyclists. The Yajima Cup Mt. Chokai Bicycle Classic Executive Committee and the Akita Cycling Federation organize the event, and its local, handcrafted atmosphere contributes to its appeal, as does the popular time trial stage.
