The Feuerwehrlauf am Schönbuchturm is a short, demanding team race in Herrenberg for fire departments and other emergency services. Each team consists of two runners, with the course focused on the ascent from the Naturfreundehaus parking lot to the Schönbuch Tower's top platform. The entire route spans just 700 meters but includes a 60-meter elevation gain and concludes with 174 steps, making it resemble a timed emergency-services climb more than a typical road race.
Teams depart at 20-second intervals, and the timing concludes only when the second runner crosses the finish line, incorporating team cohesion into the challenge. Three categories exist: one in operational clothing and protective boots, another with operational clothing, helmet, gloves, protective boots, and a carried breathing apparatus, and a youth category for participants up to age 18. The breathing apparatus is carried, not connected, and must utilize bottles of at least 6 liters, adding weight without transforming the event into a complete breathing drill.
