The Berlin Marathon is a 42.2 km road race through Germany’s capital, run since 1974 and organized by SC Charlottenburg. It draws one of marathon running’s largest fields, with a largest field of 46,983 participants and about 1 million spectators along the route.
The course is a flat, fast city loop with Brandenburg Gate as its signature landmark near the finish. It moved into West Berlin’s center after its early years, later passed through Brandenburg Gate and both sides of the city just before reunification, and became the stage for a long run of world records from Paul Tergat, Haile Gebrselassie, Patrick Makau, Wilson Kipsang, Dennis Kimetto, Eliud Kipchoge, Naoko Takahashi, and Tigist Assefa.
