Light Horse Ultra

Perry's Paddock in Woodvale gives this timed loop a plain, serious character. Light Horse Ultra is built around a "show of respect and remembrance," with runners gathering in the fields for the annual dawn service before the laps begin. The tone is set by "crisp morning air pierced with the eerie horn" of the last post and reveille. The circuit mixes limestone, boardwalk and asphalt, so the rhythm is steady but never quite dull underfoot. Past and present service men and women line up alongside hundreds of other runners from the community, with a race tradition of heavily discounted entry for those who have served. It is the kind of event where the running matters, but the reason for being there matters more: "We will ALWAYS remember them."
