The Achtkastelenloop begins and ends at sports hall 't Jebbink in Vorden, a village known for its eight castles in the Achterhoek region. This event, held in early spring since 1988, includes a 1 km children's run and 10 km, half marathon, and 30 km races suitable for both competitive and recreational participants.
The 30 km race is particularly notable. It features pacers and is uncommon in the Netherlands, serving as a final preparation for many runners targeting a spring marathon, like the one in Rotterdam. The course is fast and relatively flat, primarily on asphalt, with sections of historic cobblestones, paved cycling paths, and the wooded landscapes surrounding Vorden.
