Backyard Ultra Leersum is a last-person-standing ultrarun held at Landgoed Ginkelduin in Leersum, Utrecht province. Participants run a 6.706 km loop each hour, repeating it until they cannot start the next loop. The race has no set finish distance or typical winner’s time; it concludes when only one runner remains capable of completing a loop. All other participants are recorded as DNF, a standard aspect of the Backyard Ultra format.
The loop crosses a nature reserve near Leersum with minimal elevation gain, making the primary challenges pacing, sleep deprivation, nutrition, and maintaining composure through the repetitive nature of the event. Landgoed Ginkelduin serves as the basecamp, a constant return point for runners each hour. The event is anticipated to continue for at least two days, depending on participant endurance. This format differs significantly from a road marathon or conventional trail ultra, as the distance is determined by the runners’ own progression, one hour at a time.
