The ferry from Holwerd is part of the Vuurtoren Trail Ameland experience before anyone reaches the start line. This multi-day trail weekend is based in Hollum, on the west side of the Dutch island of Ameland, with start and finish at Zwanenplein in the village center. It is usually set up as a March weekend, with trail races, recreational distances, canitrails, walks, and a Kids Trail under the lighthouse. The program is built for both beginners and experienced trail runners, and it includes longer options such as an Ultra heading toward 't Oerd.
The routes use one marked loop per distance, with professional signs rather than repeated laps. Runners move through single tracks, loose sand, dunes, beach, and forest paths, and some distances are roughly 95% off-road. The lighthouse gives the event its name and a clear local anchor, while Hollum becomes the base for visiting trail runners across the weekend. It is not just a race for fast runners: walkers, dog-and-run participants, children, first-time trail runners, and serious ultra runners all fit into the same island program.
