Norseman begins with athletes jumping from a car ferry into the Hardangerfjord, then swimming to Eidfjord in western Norway. It is an annual point-to-point extreme triathlon with Ironman-distance legs: a 3.8 km swim, 180 km bike, and 42.2 km run. Entry is limited, with most slots decided by ballot, and the field includes many international athletes. The water can be very cold, with recorded temperatures around 10 degrees Celsius, and the swim has been shortened when safety crews judged the full distance too risky.
From Eidfjord, riders head into the mountains for 180 km, with the first 40 km climbing to about 1,200 m above sea level. The marathon begins with 25 flat kilometers toward Rjukan, then turns into a climb up Gaustatoppen, where the finish sits at 1,880 m. Racers must bring their own support crew, and that crew follows by car with food and drink before joining the athlete on the final mountain section. Competitors carry emergency food and clothing for the climb, because fatigue and mountain weather are part of the race challenge. Finishers who make the mountain cut-off receive a black finisher shirt and the name “Norsemen”; athletes who complete the distance on the lower alternative route receive a white shirt. The first edition had 21 starters, and the event’s cold-water safety work later grew into research on temperature stress, biomarkers, lung function, and heart function.
