About this race
The Great Ocean Trail Ultra is a trail race on Victoria's Shipwreck Coast, Australia, following the Great Ocean Walk towards the Twelve Apostles. Participants can enter the 100 km solo race, share that distance as a two-person relay, or select the 45 km coastal marathon. The route runs between the Southern Ocean and the Otway Ranges, offering a wilder setting than a run alongside the Great Ocean Road.
Most of the course is actual trail: approximately 73% singletrack, 20% fire trail or gravel, 5% beach, and minimal pavement. Hikers typically spend days crossing this terrain, but GOTU challenges runners to complete it in a single effort across rugged, exposed coastline. The event, formerly known as GOW100, retains a grassroots character: straightforward, demanding, and centered on the course itself rather than presentation. Post-race embraces are considered part of the occasion, fitting after a long run to one of Australia's most recognized coastal landmarks.
