Sun Peaks BC Cup | Canada Cup DH (Dunbar Summer Series)

The Sun Peaks BC Cup | Canada Cup DH is a downhill mountain bike race held at Sun Peaks Resort in British Columbia. The event is based at 1280 Alpine Road in the village of Sun Peaks. It takes place in July as part of the Dunbar Summer Series and is included in both the BC Cup Series and the Canada Cup DH calendars. The race utilizes the lift-accessed resort terrain at Sun Peaks, meaning participants focus on timed downhill runs instead of cross-country or road racing. SE Racing is the organizer, Cycling BC provides sanctioning, and its AAA-National classification indicates a competition attracting serious provincial and national-level downhill racers, as well as those competing for series points.

The Merritt Crown

The Merritt Crown is a June mountain bike endurance race held at the Coutlee Plateau Mountain Biking Recreation Area, located near Merritt in British Columbia’s Thompson-Nicola region. Hosted by Heads or Trails, it features a 120 km Full Crown, a 60 km Half Crown, and relay options for teams of two or four over the 120 km distance. The event begins early in the morning, with the long race structured as a 12-hour challenge, distinct from a casual trail ride. Participants can register for the entire series at a reduced price. The Full Crown covers 120 km with 3,000 meters of climbing, featuring steep ascents, loose descents, and open, rolling grasslands throughout Merritt’s trail network. The Half Crown is 60 km with 1,500 meters of climbing; organizers note its terrain is comparable in difficulty to the full route. Hundreds of riders participate, including solo endurance racers and relay teams sharing the distance. Free on-site camping is available for tents, RVs, and trailers, though hookups and showers are not provided; portable toilets are on site. The event supports the Merritt Mountain Biking Association through fundraising.

About cycling & running in Kamloops

Kamloops Training Notes

Running: Locals run the river routes, the hills, and the steady park loops when base miles matter. Kamloops Ridge Runners keep it simple with club runs on Tuesdays at 8:30am and 6:00pm, Thursdays at 8:30am and 6:00pm, and Saturdays at 8:30am. You can do 40 km with 190 m of gain when you want a proper aerobic day. You can do 80 km with 19 m of gain when you want smoother Z2. Walk in the Park and Ranching Life sit on the local race calendar as easy anchor events.

Cycling: Locals ride everything here, from smooth pavement to dusty gravel and singletrack. Kamloops Velo Club runs gravel, road, and youth programs, with weekly rides and the Grassland Gravel series keeping the pack moving. Sun Rivers to Lafarge Bridge down Shuswap Road is very popular. Westsyde road out to Vinsula is a nice ride up the North Thompson Valley. Barnhartvale road gives you 50 km out and back from the nature park parking lot, and Barnhartvale loop is the best route. The climbs live on the steep hillsides along the south portion of the city, the lower northeast hillsides, and Robbins Range Road.

Season: Locals can train year-round because the semi-arid climate usually plays nice. Summer brings hot, dry, sunny days, so runners shift intervals earlier and riders stack Z2 before the heat kicks in. Daytime humidity often drops below 20% during dry periods, and that cooling at night helps a lot. Occasional summer thunderstorms can change the feel fast. Winter brings short cold snaps and more cloud between November and January, but Kamloops still has the third mildest winter of any non-coastal city in Canada. Cyclists move between road, gravel, indoor Zwift, and machine-groomed singletrack.
