About this race
The Jungfrau-Marathon begins in Interlaken and leads runners up to the Eigergletscher in Switzerland's Bernese Oberland each early September. It is a 42.195 km mountain marathon with 1,953 meters of elevation gain, meaning the challenge lies not only in the distance but the sustained ascent into the high Alps. The participant limit is around 4,000, and these spots sell out, reflecting significant demand since 1993.
The course starts with a mass start in Interlaken and concludes near the Eiger Glacier. Finishers receive a long-sleeved shirt and a medal after clearing checkpoints. This race was the first full-distance alpine marathon of its kind, with over 1,500 runners completing the inaugural event. Notable elite mountain runners who have competed include Jonathan Wyatt, Tesfaye Eticha, Franziska Rochat-Moser, Emebet Abossa, Stevie Kremer, and Markus Hohenwarter. The event has also hosted the long-distance mountain running world championships. The entry package is notably practical, including public transport within Switzerland and the train back from the finish to Interlaken, along with timing, aid stations every 5 km, baggage transport, warm showers, mobile tracking, and a pasta party.
