About cycling & running in Lille

Lille Base Miles

Running: Locals run the Citadelle first, because Parc de la Citadelle is THE spot by Vieux-Lille. The loop is 14 km with 9 m of gain, so Z2 and intervals both work. The Deûle river keeps things easy, with the towpath running about 8 km to Wambrechies and 11 km to Quesnoy-sur-Deûle. Euratechnologie and île Bois Blancs give a clean 4 km turn. Lille Métropole Athlétisme is the obvious club name. The Lille running in the city and park group meets in the Citadelle. Urban Trail, semi-marathon de la braderie, 10km de Lille, and Trail des Remparts are the anchor races.

Cycling: Locals ride Lille like a flat city with escape routes. Lille and its metropolis list 22 cycling itineraries, and those routes run from 2 km to 31 km with very easy through difficult options. Chemin De Halage Deulemontfrelinghien is the steady canal choice. The Ravel trails in Belgium are great for longer base miles, and Eurovelo 12 opens the North Sea line. The parcs naturels regionales sit just southeast of Lille and make a better day out. Mont des Cats sits 40 km from Lille and gives 165 m of climbing. The terrils rise 50 to 150 m, so locals go there when bridges are not enough.

Season: Locals point to late spring and early summer when they talk about touring from Lille. Summers normally do not hit high average temperatures, so running the Citadelle loop and riding the Deûle still feel workable. The city centre keeps weekday intervals simple, and the towpaths make quiet Z2 easy when the evenings stretch. Winter changes the kit more than the habits. Temperatures can fall below freezing, even though averages stay above the freezing mark. Runners move toward the Guy Lefort track, soft park paths, and Vieux-Lille pavés, while riders keep the halage, Ravel, and short loops for steady miles.
