Running: Locals run Roanne from the river Loire, the Canal Roanne-Digoin, Mulsant, Saint-Clair, and Les Canaux, then take the sharper stuff when race legs need it. Roanne Urban Trail owns the city feel, and the 8 km and 16 km loops make a good night hit with 400 steps in the legs. Hors Stade brings the race-side energy around Tout Roanne Court, the 10 km du Côteau, and the trail de la forêt de Lespinasse. Trail de la Côte Roannaise gives the real trail test, with 11, 18, 28, and 42 km options on technical ground.
Cycling: Locals ride La Véloire for base miles, because the route gives 25 secure, marked kilometers from Roanne to Saint-Pierre-la-Noaille while it follows the Canal Roanne-Digoin. CR4C Roanne and Club Routier des 4 Chemins de Roanne give the city its road-race backbone, with yellow and blue still meaning something here. Boucle cyclable R5 suits an easy spin, and the loop covers 30 km with 150 m of gain. The climbs sit west and up, with the Bois Noir massif, Puy du Montoncel, the Madeleine mountains, and the Côte Roannaise feeding MTB, gran fondo, and crit legs.
Season: July brings trail heat with the trail de la forêt de Lespinasse and road focus around the Tour du Pays Roannais. September keeps the bike season sharp with Cyclosportive Coeur de Loire and GP de Fourneaux, while summer Z2 rolls south on La Véloire toward the Loire gorges and Montrond-les-Bains. Winter changes the rhythm, because the Roanne Urban Trail turns nocturnal and the cold settles on our cheeks under headlamps. Locals keep running punchy, keep riding steadier, and use the canal, the Loire, and the hills when the weather allows.
