The Medieval Backyard Ultra 2027

SAT, April 24, 2027 · Penarth , United Kingdom

About this race

The Medieval Backyard Ultra is a last-one-standing ultramarathon held at Cosmeston Medieval Village in Penarth, near Cardiff in South Wales. Participants run the same flat, 4.167-mile loop each hour, with each lap covering 6,706 meters. The rules are straightforward: return to the starting corral before the bell signals the top of the hour, begin the next lap, and continue until unable or unwilling to proceed. There is no conventional finish line, only the next start. The event concludes when a single runner remains and finishes a lap solo; all other participants are recorded as DNFs, regardless of the distance covered. The course is suitable for novice ultrarunners because of its flat terrain, but speed is not the sole determinant of success. The true challenge lies in a runner's ability to manage pacing, rest, nutrition, fatigue, and the hourly reset. Setting up camp is integrated into the event's flow, vehicles are prohibited from the site, and solo participants without crew can utilize a designated indoor shelter.
