A 350 km loop starting from Naples, suitable for gravel and MTB. Known as "the adventure of the South," it winds between volcanoes, lakes, and freedom. Since 2024, Vesuvio Gravel has offered a transport service to make the journey easier.
Vesuvio Ultra Marathon is a trail-running series on Mount Vesuvius, with races ranging from a 12 km short trail and 12 km walking event up to the 65 km ultra. The program also includes a 21 km Spartacus Trail and a 43 km Vesuvio Marathon, so runners can choose anything from a half-marathon-style trail day to a full mountain ultra. The event is run in September and organized by VUM Outdoor. The 65 km route is a loop around Vesuvius, with climbs on the Cognoli del Monte Somma, part of the older volcanic ridge beside the cone. Runners have up to 12 hours to finish that distance, which makes it accessible to steady trail runners as well as faster ultra specialists. The official site supports Italian, English, and French, and ENDU is involved with event services such as listings, entries, or results.
Running: Locals run the Lungomare when they want clean Z2 and a flat, breezy waterfront line with Vesuvius in the view. Villa Comunale extends that easy rhythm without making the run complicated. Old Town Napoli gives you runseeing through winding cobblestone streets when your legs can handle stop-start footwork. Corso Vittorio Emmanuele and Pedamentina San Martino give Vomero a hilly long-sidewalk option around St. Elmo’s Castle and San Martino. Bosco di Capodimonte gives you over 3 miles of forested paths and gardens. ASD Napoli Running anchors the scene, and Naples Marathon, Maratona di Napoli, COELMO Napoli City Half Marathon, and Vesuvio Ultramarathon set the race calendar.
Cycling: Locals ride the seafront when the day calls for an easy spin, and the Lungomare bike lane is short but actually nice. Posillipo Loop works for a quick spin after a long flight, especially on a weekend. The loop is 8 km and gains 1,383m. Amalfi Coast roads sit south of Naples and feel like proper gran fondo terrain. The route covers 24 miles near Avvocata with 2,064 feet of gain. Vesuvio Gravel is the anchor event for gravel and MTB.
Season: Winter gives Napoli its best endurance mood, because southern Italy stays far milder than most of Europe. January can mean cycling along the seaside with the sun in your face, and New Year touring around Rome has seen temperatures around 15C. February brings COELMO Napoli City Half Marathon, nAPOLI Relay, and Family Run & Friends, while October brings Il Bosco in Rosa. Summer brings high temperatures and humidity, so locals move intervals early and keep Z2 honest. November brings the wettest month. Winter keeps the city mild, while snow stays rare in town and more frequent on Mount Vesuvius.
