Marathon de Tokyo

The Tokyo Marathon covers 42.195 km through Japan’s capital, forming one of the Abbott World Marathon Majors. This main event is part of a larger race week organized by the Tokyo Marathon Foundation. Alongside the marathon, there is the Tokyo Marathon Family Run, the Friendship Run, and virtual race options for individuals and pairs. The participants include elite runners, elite wheelchair racers, general entrants, charity participants, and runners guided by official pacers, all within the same event framework. The event is structured as a large city marathon, not just a single day's race. It features an EXPO for attendees and exhibitors, volunteer initiatives, official merchandise like Tokyo Marathon Karuta, and projects focused on sustainability and art. The charity program contributes to specific causes, such as Noto Peninsula earthquake relief. The Foundation also manages related initiatives, including ONE TOKYO, RUN as ONE, GREEN MILEAGE, the Tokyo Legacy Half Marathon, and Run with Heart.

About cycling & running in Tokyo

Tokyo Base Miles, River Roads

Running: Locals run the Imperial Palace loop when they want simple base miles right in the heart of the city. Tokyo Running Club runs around Kokyogaien on weekday evenings around 7 PM, and the pace stays comfortable enough for chat. Yoyogi Park, Ueno Park, and the Meguro River handle easy days when the city centre feels too tight. Shiba Park gives stair work next to Zozoji, and each stair is quite deep but the rise is low. Tokyo Marathon is the anchor event, and Tokyo Legacy Half Marathon keeps the calendar honest.

Cycling: Locals ride flat first, then point west when the legs need climbing. The Imperial Palace loop course runs about 5km, Komazawa Olympic Park gives a 2km dedicated course, and the Yamanote Line loop course stretches about 35km for urban Z2. Tama River Cycling Road runs about 50km, and Arakawa Cycling Road runs about 80-90km for steady base miles. Half Fast starts many rides by the Grand Hyatt in Roppongi Hills, while TCC, Tokyo Cycling Club, and Positivo Espresso cover social rides, strong groups, and hills around Tokyo. Mount Takao, Takao & Yabitsu, and the Tama area hold the proper climbs.

Season: Spring and autumn are the clean choice for both sports, with March-May and September-November giving pleasant temperatures and lower rainfall. Summer averages 27°C, so locals move intervals early, keep Z2 honest, and treat riverside shade like a training tool. Annual rainfall averages nearly 1530mm, and wetter summers make the Arakawa River, Tama River, and park loops useful because they are easy to bail from. Winter drops to 1°C, and sporadic snow pushes cyclists toward flatter city loops while runners keep the Palace and parks ticking.
