Liverpool - Sefton Park 10k

The Liverpool Sefton Park 10k is a 10-kilometre race held within Sefton Park, a major public park in Liverpool. Part of a larger race series, this event has taken place over multiple editions, organized by a local running club and a team of volunteers. The race caters to a diverse group of participants, including local club members, individuals aiming for a quick 10k time, and those seeking a convenient park race instead of a large urban road event. The course follows paved paths throughout the park and is predominantly flat, offering participants a good opportunity for a personal best without significant ascents. The route winds past park landmarks, remaining within the green space. This approach simplifies logistics and maintains a close connection between runners, volunteers, and spectators. The event has seen increased participation over the years and frequently collaborates with a charity partner, reinforcing its local, community-driven character.

The Drop Liverpool

The Drop Liverpool begins with participants surrendering their phones, watches, and maps before boarding a bus blindfolded to an unknown location outside the city. This Liverpool-area navigation challenge is based at the Watersports Centre, L3 4DG, commencing at 10:00am with straight-line drop options of 6, 10, or 15 miles. From the drop point, the task is straightforward yet challenging: return to the event centre on foot by using judgment, instinct, and a sensible route choice. There are no course markings or directions provided. The advertised distances are as the crow flies, meaning the actual distance covered by runners can be significantly longer. The event takes participants across Merseyside’s surrounding trail and urban terrain, distinguishing it from a standard race and presenting it more as a mobile puzzle for weary participants.

Birkenhead Park 5 Mile

The Birkenhead Park 5 Mile is an evening road race in Birkenhead, Merseyside, starting from St Mary's Cricket Club at 7:00pm. It has run every year since 1972, with a measured 5-mile course, chip timing for all runners, and a 1-mile kids' fun run earlier in the evening at 6:00pm. The route is built around laps, with a water station on each lap. The event maintains a club-race atmosphere while offering incentives: cash prizes go to the top three men and women, and £100 is available for a new course record in either race. Finishers receive a memento, professional photos are free, and the setting is noteworthy: Birkenhead Park was designed by Joseph Paxton, influenced New York's Central Park, and includes landmarks such as the Grand Entrance, the Roman Boathouse, and the Swiss Bridge, the only traditional wooden covered bridge of its kind in the UK.

About cycling & running in Birkenhead

Birkenhead Training Notes

Running: Birkenhead Park gives local runners the easy first lap, with the Birkenhead Park 5km route sitting right there among the lakes. The route is 128 km with 26 m ascent, so locals use it for Z2, tempo, or a quick check on the legs. Birkenhead Park Running Club meets at the Rugby Club at 6:30 PM on Tuesdays and Fridays, and over 60 BP:RC runners don their volt yellow race tops when the big days come round. The Birkenhead Park Marathon covers 793 km and gives the anchor event feel.

Cycling: Birkenhead North End Cycling Club carries the old-school road scene, and the club was founded on January 14th, 1901. Birkenhead North End CC sends club runs from Net's café, Neston, at 10am on Wednesdays, 10am on Saturdays, and 9:30am on Sundays. The Wednesday and Saturday rides cover 78 km with 274 m of climbing. The Sunday ride covers 433 km with 2205 m of climbing. August brings the club 5-mile time trials, so the crit legs get a proper poke.

Season: May and August bring the busiest cycling feel, with longer evenings, steadier base miles, and Tuesday and Thursday senior training from the Burton Marshes Boardwalk gate at 6.00pm in summer. Birkenhead Park still works for intervals when the days are warm, and the prom towards New Brighton gives runners a clean out-and-back feel. Winter shifts the mood fast, so locals lean on park laps, urban loops, and shorter Z2 rides. Youth riders move toward short off-road rides from September through December, while runners keep using Birkenhead Park, Arrowe Park, and the waterfront when the weather plays fair.
