About cycling & running in WokingWoking Training Notes
Running: Woking runners tend to start with Woking Park, because Woking parkrun gives you quick tarmac, a dirt trail section, twists, turns, and a slight incline towards the end of each lap. Locals use the Canal route, Hoe Valley route, Horsell route, St John's route, and Goldsworth Park Lake route for steady Z2 and midweek intervals. Cruisers Running Club keeps things social from Woking Leisure Centre car park on Tuesdays and Thursdays. No Sweat Running Community and Run Company Woking Run Crew cover the easier end too. Surrey Half Marathon, Martian Race 5K, 10K & 21K, and North Downs 50 Ultra Challenge make handy anchor events.
Cycling: Woking cyclists get a lot from the Planet Network, especially Saturn on the Basingstoke Canal towpath and Neptune out towards Goldsworth Park and Knaphill. National Cycle Route 221 follows the canal between Pirbright and New Haw through Woking town centre, and National Cycle Route 223 passes through Woking and Westfield. Woking Cycling Club does Saturday, Sunday, and Wednesday rides, with coffee-and-cake energy and some riders chasing time trials and hill climbs. The route covers 4 km of paved riding and gains 407 m. East Hill, St Martha's Hill, Newlands Corner, and the Surrey Hills bring the climbing.
Season: Woking works well when the paths are dry, because summer keeps the canal, Woking Park, and the road loops easy for base miles before a gran fondo, crit, or triathlon block. The Guildford Triathlon and Kids Aquathlon gives July a useful target, while Surrey Half Marathon and Martian Race plans can shape the run calendar. Winter changes the shoes and the bike setup more than the mood. Woking parkrun can get pretty muddy on the wooded trail section, the ground there has poor drainage, and locals switch from fast tarmac thinking to trail grip, cyclocross legs, and steadier Z2 rides.
