BMCC Ditchling Beacon Hill Climb

The Ditchling Beacon Hill Climb is a one-mile mid-week cycling event held on Ditchling Beacon in East Sussex. Organized by Brighton Mitre CC, it serves as a fitness test and training race. The first rider departs shortly after entries close in the evening, lending the event a straightforward club-night atmosphere: arrive, ride uphill intensely, and receive a time. Brighton Mitre members participate without charge, while other riders incur a modest entry fee. Online registration is recommended to assist the organizer in seeding the field accurately. The climb follows the road from Ditchling up the steep northern aspect of Ditchling Beacon, which stands as the highest point in East Sussex at 248 metres and ranks third among the South Downs' highest points. Participants submit an estimated time to facilitate a start order from fastest to slowest, minimizing the risk of encountering vehicles on the confined ascent. While late entries are permitted, they forfeit the seeding benefit. The hill itself possesses considerable historical significance for a one-mile time trial; it was formerly an Iron Age hill fort, retaining remnants of ramparts on its northern and eastern flanks. The same road has featured in prominent London-to-Brighton routes and top-tier professional races.

About cycling & running in Brighton

Brighton Training Notes

Running: Locals stack base miles between Preston Park, Stanmer Park, The Level, East Brighton Park, Queen's Park and Wild Park. Brighton to Saltdean gives you a 10k one way run from Brighton Pier, with flat rhythm and rocky beaches. Saddlescoombe Farm gives you a 5k round trip when you want dew ponds, wildflowers and some pretty cute sheep. Run The Lanes meets every Thursday at 6pm at FMG Project for an easy, social paced 5km run. Brighton Running Girls meets at SPRO Coffee on Wednesday evening and Sunday morning. Brighton Marathon & 10K, BrighTEN and RunThrough Brighton TEN & 10k anchor the calendar.

Cycling: Locals ride the seafront when they want Z2 and the South Downs when they want bite. The Coastal Cycle Route runs 9 miles from Shoreham to Rottingdean, and the Seafront to the Downs Route mixes coast and countryside. The South Downs Way gives riders 160km of National Trail, and the Downs Link can be picked up from Shoreham and goes all the way to Guildford. Brighton Mitre Cycling Club, Brighton Excelsior, Brighton & Hove Cycling UK and Brighton & Hove Clarion Cycle Club keep the bunch rides moving. Ditchling Beacon holds the climbing bragging rights, with the Ditchling Beacon Hill Climb, Hilly10 and 10TT sitting as proper anchor events.

Season: Spring and summer suit Brighton best, because the city gives runners steady coastal pacing and cyclists longer light for base miles into the Downs. July and August bring the highest average sea temperatures, and summer racing gives you Brighton TEN June 2026, BrighTEN Seafront Run 2027 and the Brighton & Hove Triathlon and Multisport Festival. Winter keeps the work honest, with cool days and frequent cloudy and rainy periods. Locals shift more running toward the seafront, Preston Park and social club miles, while riders pick clearer windows for the South Downs, intervals, cyclocross-style muck and road loops around Hove, Patcham and The Steyne.
