Cardiff Summer Series 2 miles

The Cardiff Summer Series 2 miles is a single race within a four-event evening series held in Pontcanna Fields, Cardiff. It begins at 7:30pm, with registration located next to the start and finish area. The series is intentionally straightforward and economical, offering distinct prices for affiliated and non-affiliated runners, along with a reduced rate for entering the full series before the initial race. The races commence and conclude within Pontcanna Fields, with the finish line situated on Spine Road. The present course configuration bypasses the SWALEC stadium and maintains a constant finish location throughout the series. Standings are determined by the combined time across all four events, allowing participants to compete in a single race or aim for a series ranking. The entry fee does not include finisher medals or T-shirts; instead, awards are presented to the top three male and female finishers on the night, and series prizes are given to category winners.

Cardiff Taff Trail Half Marathon

The Cardiff Taff Trail Half Marathon begins at Pontcanna Fields Car Park, directing runners into one of Cardiff’s primary green spaces. This chip-timed half marathon features online entry, an 08:30 start, and race-number collection prior to the start. With a 3-hour cutoff, it is structured as an efficient city race, not an extended trail excursion. The course crosses Pontcanna Fields and Bute Park before proceeding north on the Taff Trail towards Tongwynlais. The majority of the route follows tarmac paths, with a brief compacted section. Aid stations are located at approximately 2.5, 6.25, and 10.25 miles. The event originated as a pilot and resumed post-Covid cancellations, offering Cardiff a smaller Taff Trail half to complement the city's larger October road race.

Big Moose Ultra Fun Run

The Big Moose Ultra Fun Run takes place in Cardiff's Bute Park, offering distances from 5K to ultra. The event focuses on fundraising for mental health initiatives, aiming to attract participants who wish to support this cause while completing their chosen distance. Participants can select from 5K, 10K, half marathon, marathon, or ultra distances, all starting and finishing in Bute Park, South Wales. The event facilitates charity fundraising via GoFundMe, and published past results establish its standing beyond a single fun run.

About cycling & running in Cardiff

Cardiff Training Notes

Running: locals keep the easy running close to the River Taff, with Bute Park, Pontcanna Fields, and Llandaff Fields giving you a big green block for Z2. Roath Park gives steady loops, and Roath Park lake also works with a loop around the reservoir. Cefn Onn and home again gives a 10k with a steep pull on Thornhill Road. Pegasus Running Club meets at Cathedral Green in Llandaff at 6:45pm for a 7pm start on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday evenings. Cardiff Half Marathon and Cardiff 10k are the anchor races, with Cardiff Summer Series keeping Pontcanna sharp.

Cycling: locals ride because Cardiff is flat and compact in the middle, then hilly fast once you point north, east, or west. The Taff Trail runs 55 miles between Cardiff and Brecon, and it gives proper base miles without much faff. Cardiff Bay Trail gives over 10km around the Bay, and the Cardiff heritage loop gives 75km from the National Museum Cardiff. Cardiff Ajax Cycling Club meets at Maindy Centre, and Cardiff JIF cycling club members train on the Gwent levels and hills of South Wales. Caerphilly mountain, Garth Hill, Wattsville to Cwm Carn, and Penylan Hill bring the climbing; CARTEN100 is the anchor sportive.

Season: Winter days give you about 6 hours of sunshine. Locals use those long evenings for intervals in Pontcanna, steady rides over the barrage, and Z2 along the Taff Trail. Winter changes the feel without killing the training, because Cardiff stays mild, wet, cloudy, and windy rather than properly frozen. The Taff Trail is beautiful in winter, but slippery leaves change the line, and the north of the county feels cooler and wetter while the south stays flatter and low-lying.
