Yorkshire Marathon & 10 Mile
SUN OCT 18
The Yorkshire Marathon & 10 Mile offers a full 26.2-mile race and a 10-mile race on the same day in York. The marathon begins and ends at the University of York. The 10 Mile starts in the city center, providing a shorter option that includes many of the same local sights. The marathon course guides thousands of runners annually along country lanes and past historic locations surrounding York. This route suits runners who wish to see city landmarks without completing the full marathon.

The longer distances include 10K, 10 miles, half marathon, 20 miles, marathon, and ultra, with the Ghostly 1 Mile Fun Run offering a shorter option for children and families. The course follows a flat, out-and-back path along the canal towpath, providing straightforward navigation and consistent footing instead of a technical trail. The 20-miler consists of two 10-mile laps, and the marathon comprises two half-marathon laps. Costumes are encouraged, with prizes for the best Halloween outfits. All finishers will receive custom medals and Halloween treats. The races are Trail Running Association licensed, and marshals and aid stations will be present to support participants.

In November, runners at Croft Motor Circuit in North Yorkshire trade cars for laps on a smooth, traffic-free tarmac racing circuit. The event provides 5k, 10k, half marathon, 20-mile, and marathon distances, catering to both short-course runners and those seeking a longer chip-timed result on a flat, controlled course. The route follows the motor racing circuit, with each mile clearly marked and marshals present to guide participants. Croft has hosted motorsport, including the British Touring Car Championship, British Rallycross, and Pickup Truck Racing, since the 1920s, making a chequered-flag finish appropriate for the venue. Entry includes a themed medal, chip-timed results, free race photos, water, and post-race refreshments.

Crikey its the Christmas Cracker Day 1
SAT DEC 12
Crikey Its the Christmas Cracker Day 1 starts and finishes at Hollybush Conservation Centre in Kirkstall, Leeds, with runners heading onto the Leeds and Liverpool Canal towpath. It is a Christmas-themed trail running event in the It’s Grim Up North Running series, with 5K, 10K, half marathon, and marathon options. The flat canal route and good-quality trail make it workable for first-timers, steady club runners, and people using the day for a longer winter run. The course follows an out-and-back format along the canal, so pacing is simple and the terrain stays straightforward. It is fully marshalled and clearly signed, with feed and drink stations at regular intervals, but it is cup-less, so runners need to bring a reusable cup or bottle. This race is Day 1 of the Christmas Cracker Weekend, and runners can choose one day or both. Race HQ keeps the seasonal theme going with music, food, festive treats, a Christmas tree, and a bespoke Christmas medal for every finisher.

The race begins in the morning, designed for those seeking an organised winter race rather than a difficult, technical trail. Charm Bracelet Marathon & Half Marathon
SUN APR 11
The Charm Bracelet Half Marathon is a coastal trail race in North Yorkshire. It starts at 09:15 and finishes in the fishing village of Staithes. The route is 14.35 miles, longer than a standard half, with 1,591 ft of climbing. It suits runners and quick walkers prepared for uneven ground, not road-race pacing. The course goes south from Redcar along the King Charles III England Coast Path, incorporating sections of the Cleveland Way and passing through coastal villages en route to Staithes. Underfoot conditions include mud, sand, rocks, trees, and cliff-top paths. A sand section and the Circle sculpture are encountered between miles 7 and 8. The race is named after this sculpture, known as the Charm Bracelet, which also inspired the marathon. Entries include a medal, water, and snacks at two aid stations. Trophies are awarded in overall and veteran categories. Runners may opt to plant a tree via Trees Not Tees instead of receiving a shirt.

About Marathon races in York

York Training Notes

York hosts 11 Marathon races in 2026 within 80 km of the city centre — upcoming dates, recurring series, and other races nearby, all in one place.

York keeps running simple, flat, and social. Locals use the River Ouse, the River Foss, the inside of the city walls, and York racecourse when Z2 needs no drama. Holgate Harriers meet at York RI RUFC near West Bank Park around 6:50 for a briefing, then head out at 7pm. Holgate Harriers usually split into 5.5k, 7.5k, and 10k groups around South Bank, Acomb, Holgate, and Knapton. Run York, Heworth Harriers, and York Knavesmire Harriers cover everything from casual miles to marathon blocks. The Drop York, York 10K, and the York 5K Series give the calendar its anchor events.

York riding is a mixed bag, but locals can get about easy enough. The Planet Trail runs from near the racecourse out Selby way, and the 13km Orbital Route gives mostly off-main-road miles. York Rouleurs leave Cycle Heaven on Hospital Fields Road at 9am every Sunday, with 30, 40, 50, and 60-mile groups and a no-drop feel. Clifton CC, York Bike Belles, and York Outdoor Group fill in the club scene. South of the city, country roads carry steady base miles with fewer cars. York has few local climbs, so riders head for the Howardian Hills in about 45-60 minutes when they want proper uphill work.

May to July is the sweet spot for both sports. York gets its most sunshine then, with about six hours per day, and summer can sit warmer than the Yorkshire coast with temperatures of 27 °C or more. Summer runners lean on the river, the walls, and the 3km tarmac path inside York racecourse. Summer riders use The Planet Trail, the old railway line path, and longer Sunday routes like North Loop or Big Loop, Tiny Loop. Winter brings frost, fog, and cold winds, so locals keep layers handy, fit wider tyres, and move sharper bike work to York Sport Village Cycle Circuit.
