Chernisky Ghost Town Trail-a-thon
SAT OCT 3
The Chernisky Ghost Town Trail-a-thon is an October trail event held at Duman Lake County Park in Ebensburg, Pennsylvania. This event concludes the Cambria County Trails Series, which features one event on each county trail. It utilizes the Ghost Town Trail, a route previously named a Pennsylvania Trail of the Year. Participants can select a marathon, 15-miler, 5k, adaptive-device 5k, firefighter turnout gear 5k, or the "Couch Potato 0.0k" for those preferring not to race. The longer running races conclude at Duman Lake County Park. Transportation will be available from the finish area to the marathon and 15-mile start locations. The cycling option is a relaxed 26.2-mile group ride. It begins at Duman Lake County Park and travels to the Twin Rocks trailhead, following the Ghost Town Trail and C & I Extension. Cyclists may use the aid stations designated for runners. Youth participation in the series is free, and all proceeds benefit the improvement and expansion of Cambria County trails.

Rowe's Research Runners Annual Event
SUN OCT 18
Rowe’s Research Runners Annual Event is a walk, run, and roll fundraiser in Boalsburg, Pennsylvania, with a virtual option for those unable to attend in person. The in-person gathering uses the Pennsylvania Military Museum as its base, and the event supports research into ME/CFS, dysautonomia, long COVID, and related illnesses. This is the ninth annual edition, and registration does not include a T-shirt; shirts and extra merchandise are sold separately. The event originated from Emily Steffensmeier’s birthday fundraiser and her desire to thank Dr. Peter Rowe, the physician who helped her transition from being bedridden toward a fuller life. Rowe’s Research Runners collaborates with Johns Hopkins Children’s Center, and all money raised goes directly to Dr. Rowe and his colleagues at the Chronic Fatigue and Related Disorders Clinic. The cause is personal and medical: Emily has lived with these conditions for 24 years, and the event focuses on fundraising, awareness, and connection for patients and families managing illnesses that can affect the nervous system, immune function, heart rate, blood pressure, breathing, digestion, and daily energy.
Knights on the Run 5K
TUE NOV 17
Knights on the Run is a road race in North Andover, Massachusetts, organized by NAAA. It features a traditional 5K and a kids run. Check-in and race-day registration begin at 8:30 a.m. at North Andover High School. Walk-in registration is available after online signup closes the previous evening. The kids event, Knights in Training, is for children under 12 and starts at 9:00 a.m. Its grade-group courses for Pre-K through second grade and third through fifth grade are each about a quarter mile. Proceeds support the North Andover Athletic Association, which has backed North Andover athletics for more than 50 years. When construction interrupts the traditional 5K course, the organizer still runs the kids event.
First Night Resolution Run 5K
THU DEC 31
The First Night Resolution Run 5K is a New Year's Eve 5K held in State College, Pennsylvania, connected to the town's First Night festivities. It is noted as an annual December race, offering participants a brief, end-of-year running opportunity before the year concludes. The public listing provides the distance and location but lacks a detailed course map. The primary draw is its straightforward structure: a single 5K run within State College's 16801 zip code on December 31. The absence of runner reviews on the source page suggests it is a modest local event rather than a widely publicized destination race.

About 5K races in Altoona

Altoona Base Miles And Mountain Work

Altoona hosts 22 5K races in 2026 within 80 km of the city centre — upcoming dates, recurring series, and other races nearby, all in one place.

Altoona runners get a real mix from Logan Valley, Pleasant Valley, and the base of Brush Mountain. Locals use Lakemont Park, Heritage Plaza, Legion Park, Tiger Stadium, Junior High, Reservoir Park, Mansion Park Stadium, and Duncansville Memorial Park when they want steady miles without leaving town. The Logan Valley loop is 75 km with 344 m of gain, so it works when Z2 turns into climbing. The Pleasant Valley loop is 33 km with 130 m of gain. Local race days revolve around the Angie Gioiosa Memorial 4th of July Race, Precious Life's Run for Life 5k/2mi Race, and Rock 'N The Knob Trail Challenge.

Altoona riders have the Blair Bicycle Club right in town, and that gives the road scene a clear home base. The typical loop runs 75 km with 344 m of gain and enough grade to keep the legs honest. Brush Mountain puts the climbing close, and Blue Knob Mountain gives the bigger mountain-adjacent target. Canoe Creek State Park and Canoe Creek Lake fit the tri crowd through the Canoe Creek Triathlon & Races. The Altoona PA Biathlon adds another local anchor, while Rock 'N The Knob Trail Challenge pulls the endurance crowd toward Blue Knob.

September treats Altoona well, even though it brings the greatest precipitation, because the air usually feels better for base miles, intervals, and long rides. September temps hit 0°C, so locals start early before Lakemont Park, Heritage Plaza, and Brush Mountain feel heavy. September mornings drop to 0°C with moderately cold swings. Runners stay closer to town routes like Blinking Light, Broadway to Betty's, and Run 1, while riders save bigger climbing days for clearer roads and rebuild Z2 indoors when needed.
