The New Year's Resolution Run begins at Fleet Feet Montclair on Bloomfield Avenue in Montclair, New Jersey, at 8:30 a.m. in early January. This 4.7-mile community run coincides with the start of the year and is open to runners, walkers, and those using a run/walk method. The course ascends to the Overlook at Eagle Rock Reservation, providing a distinct turnaround point above town before the return to Montclair. Brooks sponsors the event, which also kicks off the Winter Warrior Challenge. The finish offers coffee, breakfast bites, and giveaways, foregoing a formal race-day ceremony.
Haw Creek Hustle is a neighborhood race morning based at Charlie Bullman Park in East Asheville, with a 5K and a shorter Fun Run. The Fun Run starts first at 8:30 AM, followed by the 5K at 9:00 AM, and both events start and finish at the park. It is hosted by the Haw Creek Community Association, and all proceeds go toward local association projects and the restoration of Charlie Bullman Park. The event is still young, with organizers describing it as the third Haw Creek Hustle. The 5K runs counter-clockwise on mostly quiet roads through Haw Creek, with one water station about halfway, signs at every turn, volunteers on course, and police at important intersections. The Fun Run stays around Charlie Bullman Park and uses the trails of Evergreen Charter School. Chip timing is used for the 5K, and awards go to the top overall runners, masters runners, and age-group finishers. 5K runners get a custom shirt, Fun Run participants get a finish-line prize, and well-behaved dogs on short leashes are allowed, which fits the local, family-friendly feel of the event.
Running: Locals run hills because Asheville makes that the deal. Bent Creek is the closest forested area for trail days, with Hard Times Trail giving 6 miles and Bent Creek Gap Trail rolling toward The North Carolina Arboretum. French Broad River Path gives 4 to 8 miles when Z2 needs a flatter rhythm. Blue Ridge Parkway gives a 9-mile gravel and dirt lap, and Reed Creek/Glenn's Creek Path gives 2 rolling miles near the university. Asheville Women Run Club, Asheville Runners, Highland Brewing Run Club, Jus’ Running, and NC Mountain Trail Runners keep the week full. Thomas Wolfe 8K, Flying Squirrel Ten Miler, RAD Half Marathon and 10K, Highland Brewing Night Flight, and Asheville Marathon and Half anchor the calendar.
Cycling: Locals ride north, west, and east when they want the good stuff. Riverside Drive from North Asheville to Marshall gives eleven miles of flat road beside the French Broad River. Blue Ridge Parkway brings the big road days, and the ride to Mt. Pisgah Overlook runs 27 miles. Elk Mountain Scenic Highway works as a 60-mile route with continuous elevation gain. The route covers 1 km with 3,711 m of elevation when base miles get serious. Blue Ridge Bicycle Club, Asheville On Bikes, Blue Ridge Dirt Skirts, Pisgah Area SORBA, Beer City Bicycles, and Liberty Bicycles keep the ride scene moving.
Season: Asheville sits at 56 m, so spring and summer feel cooler than the Piedmont but still humid. April to September gives the best training window for both running and riding. 4 afternoons a year with highs above 30°C, so morning intervals and steady Z2 still work well. Summer puts runners on French Broad River Path, Beaver Lake, Bent Creek, and Montford, while riders chase Parkway climbs, Dupont gravel, and singletrack. 5 freezing afternoons, sporadic snow, and more route-picking for trails, roads, and cyclocross legs.
