K-Town on the River Triathlons

K-Town on the River Triathlons are held at Suttree's Landing on Waterfront Drive in Knoxville, Tennessee, with the Tennessee River influencing the entire event. The series offers athletes three distances: a Sprint, an Olympic, and a half-iron. The Sprint includes a short downstream swim, a 14-mile bike ride, and a 5K run. The Olympic race features a swim from Island Home to Suttree's Landing, a 25-mile bike leg, and a 10K run. The half-iron option begins with a longer swim, briefly upstream before heading downstream, followed by a 56-mile bike ride and a half marathon. The courses utilize South Knoxville, differing from a closed stadium course. Cyclists will travel up Island Home and onto local roads, with half-iron participants experiencing more of the countryside south of the river. The run follows the riverbank through the historic Island Home neighborhood and onto the Will Skelton Greenway. Longer races extend past Meads Quarry and, for the half-iron, toward Forks of the River before returning to Suttree's Landing. The run course is shaded, alongside the river, and gently rolling. The event uses in-water wave starts, provides shuttles to the swim start, hosts a finish-line expo during the race, and donates 15% of gross revenue to charity partners.

About cycling & running in Knoxville

Knoxville Training Notes

Running: Knoxville runners get a park-heavy setup with greenways, river paths, and trail miles close to town. Locals use Ten Mile Creek Greenway, Volunteer Landing, Riverside Park, Worlds Fair Park, and the Urban Wilderness South Loop for easy Z2 or sharper intervals. I.C. King Park brings King’s Crown Trail, Everest Low Trail, and the three crowns: Everest, Middle, and Kimble’s Ladder. Seven Islands State Birding Park keeps things wide and soft beside the French Broad River. The East Lakeshore system gives runners 30 miles of trail, and Coytee Branch loop covers 2.4 miles. Knoxville Track Club, SlowKno Running Club, KnoxTerra Running Club, and South Knox Trail Runners keep the calendar full. Covenant Health Knoxville Marathon, Whiskey Run Knoxville, and Xterra Knoxville Trail Race Half Marathon anchor the year.

Cycling: Knoxville riders get greenway spins, road rollers, mountain bike singletrack, and real climbs once they point out of town. Happy Creek Road runs 3 km and gains 905 m, with short climbs, rollers, and sections that feel like singletrack for road bikes. Another route runs 5 km and climbs 1,182 m through farmland and East Tennessee hollars. One climb goes 1 km and gains 1,374 m. One route runs 8 km with 90 m of climbing from the James White Greenway through Worlds Fair Park. Locals find gravel around House Mountain in Corryton, south toward Blount County, North Boundary in Oak Ridge, and Norris Watershed by the dam. Kickstand Bicycle Collective and Knoxville Regional Bicycle Program hold down the bike scene, while Ride of Silence and K-Town on the River Triathlons mark the calendar.

Season: Spring and fall are the best months because Knoxville lets runners and riders stack base miles without fighting the weather. The average low in summer sits around 21°C while 36 days per year reach 30°C. Locals shift long runs, intervals, and longer rides earlier, then use greenways, Seven Islands, or smoother trails when the heat starts leaning on pace. Winter lows average around 1°C and the city gets about 5 days when the high stays at or below freezing. Snow usually shows up in small amounts, and runners and cyclists just move toward greenways, road loops, and smoother trails when roots, rocks, and singletrack get sloppy.
