Rocket to the Moon 5k

The Rocket to the Moon 5k begins and ends at the Auglaize County Fairgrounds in Wapakoneta, Ohio, Neil Armstrong's hometown, on July 4. This event includes a 5k run/walk, a Kids 1-Mile Fun Run, and a virtual 5k option. It is part of the Moon City Challenge, which also features the Moonlight Glow Run and Run to the Moon. Participants who register for the full Moon Series are eligible to receive an additional Moon Challenge Medal. The route follows paved roads through Wapakoneta and is predominantly flat, making it suitable for walkers, local runners, children, and those seeking a simple holiday 5k. The Moon theme extends beyond the town's Apollo heritage, connecting to Moon trees. These trees originated from seeds that orbited the Moon on Apollo 14 and were later part of Artemis I. Most of the Apollo seeds sprouted, resulting in approximately 420 seedlings planted across the United States and internationally.

About cycling & running in Lima

Lima Base Miles And Race Days

Running: Locals run Faurot Park when they want company, race-day nerves, and an easy landmark. Stadium Park gives another simple park option for steady miles. The Ottawa River keeps the river walk in the mix for short runs and tri legs. The Ottawa River trail runs 49 km and gains 28m, so locals use it for longer Z2 without much climbing. The full trail stretches 87 km and gains 31m. The Mimosa 5k, Star Spangled Spectacular, Girl Can Cook Memorial Run, Hope in Every Step 5K, and Run to the Moon fill out the local race calendar.

Cycling: Riders in Lima lean on TEAM ROADRUNNERS - Lima Ohio Cycling Club when they want wheels to follow. The club keeps the small scene moving and talks straight about growing cycling participation in Allen County and beyond. The Lima YMCA Kewpee Triathlon & Duathlon has a 15-mile bike course on rolling country roads. The climbs sit where the brief puts them, on those rollers and around 19 Hawthorne. Locals treat the rest like base miles, intervals, crit prep, gran fondo fitness, or cyclocross legs on mostly flat paved roads.

Season: Spring gives runners and riders the cleanest build into race rhythm, and the club ride schedule starts on 4/25. June and July carry the loud summer block, with Moonlight Glow 5K on June 20, Star Spangled Spectacular and Rocket to the Moon 5k on July 4, and Miles for Mutts plus Run to the Moon on July 18. Summer means early starts, river walk runs, and country-road Z2 before the day gets heavy. Winter changes the feel for both sports, and locals keep it practical with flatter paved routes, shorter loops, and steady fitness work.
