Run the Runway

Run the Runway takes participants onto the newly renovated tarmac at Midland Airpark in Midland, Texas, rather than city streets or park paths. ConocoPhillips presents this annual event, which features a chip-timed 5K with age-division scoring and a 1-mile fun run. This setup allows families, walkers, aviation enthusiasts, and competitive local runners to participate on the airport grounds. The course utilizes airport property, offering participants the unique opportunity to run where planes typically take off. In a past edition, it was the sole race held on airport property in Texas. The event also inaugurates the City of Midland’s Fly Into Fall, a public aviation day featuring aircraft displays, aviation professionals, flight simulators, drone activities, airport fire truck demonstrations, classic cars, children's activities, food vendors, and coffee.

MCHS Foundation Tumbleweed Triathlon

The MCHS Foundation Tumbleweed Triathlon is a sprint triathlon in Odessa, Texas, held at the University of Texas Permian Basin pool and campus. Taking place in July, it adheres to USA Triathlon rules. The course includes a 400-yard pool swim, a 20K bike ride, and a 5K run. Chip timing is used, helmets are mandatory for the bike leg, and the event is limited to 66 individual participants and 10 teams, making it a local, compact race. The swim is conducted in a 50-meter pool using a snake format, where participants progress lane by lane. The bike course is flat, utilizing closed lanes around the UTPB campus. The 5K run is an out-and-back route on campus roads with minimal traffic. Participants must attend a pre-race meeting before the start. Packet pickup requires identification and either a USAT card or a one-day registration. This event supports the Medical Center Health Foundation and has been held for over twenty years.

2 mile

2 Mile is a small paddleboard race in Sacramento, California, run over a two-mile distance. The listed start is in the afternoon, with racers leaving together in a mass start rather than in waves or time-trial order. The available results show only two racers, so this was closer to a tiny local outing than a large race series. Timing was recorded on an iPhone through Webscorer, and the source does not give a detailed route, waterway, organizer, or recurring schedule.

About cycling & running in Odessa

Odessa Training Notes

Running: 432 Run Crew and The Athletic Company give the scene its social pull, especially around the Special Olympics Texas Torch Run 5k. The flat roads let you knock out 20 km while gaining +50 m. You can stretch out to 09 km with +42 m for longer Z2 days. Comanche Trail 5K Route, UTPB 5K, Habitat 5K, and Sherwood run keep shorter intervals easy to line up.

Cycling: Odessa riders get their best dirt at Odessa Mountain Bike Park, where over 18 miles of trail sit inside 95 acres. The park gives locals singletrack for MTB laps, skills work, and cyclocross-style handling when the wind is up. The main loop runs 6 km and gains 23 m, so the climbs are short and honest. 3 km. MCHS Foundation Tumbleweed Triathlon gives the bike crowd an anchor event with a 20 km, three-loop course.

Season: Late spring and summer are the best months when locals want heat, daylight, and steady training rhythm. Summer brings hot, sunny days, big temperature swings, and frequent high winds, so runners start early and riders watch for gusts. Odessa rewards Z2 patience more than hero pacing once the sun gets high. Winter brings cool, dry weather and rare snowfall, so you can keep running and riding year-round. Locals use winter for base miles, park loops, and cleaner interval blocks before the next 5K, triathlon, gran fondo-style ride, or marathon build.
