Odessa sits on the Permian Basin's high plains at 900m elevation where running means heat, wind, and minimal shade — the Special Olympics Texas Torch Run 5K and Run the Runway are both flat, fast courses through town. Cyclists find themselves on featureless terrain with long straight roads stretching into West Texas scrubland; serious mileage is the appeal here rather than elevation or technical riding.
