The Buffalo 50 begins at Granite Sports in Hill City, directing mountain bikers into the Southern Black Hills of South Dakota. This 50-mile mountain bike race consists of two 25-mile laps, offering solo endurance entries for those completing the full distance and relay options for teams sharing the effort. The course combines dirt trails with segments of the Mickelson Trail, providing a true Black Hills racing experience instead of a basic road ride on mountain bikes. The event adopts the phrase “Ride. Roam. Repeat.”, reflecting its two-lap structure: depart, navigate the hills and trail sections, and then complete the circuit again.
Tatanka is a youth mountain bike race in Sturgis, South Dakota, held in July as part of the South Dakota Youth Cycling League. It offers young riders a race-day environment focused on mountain biking, skill development, and enjoyment. The league aims to establish the youth cycling structure that South Dakota, Wyoming, and North Dakota have needed. Course maps are available for the Tatanka event, though specific route details are not yet published. The league intends for the field to be diverse, welcoming riders of all skill levels, genders, ethnicities, and financial backgrounds. Tatanka is also part of a broader effort to grow youth cycling in the region through volunteers, donations, host events, and additional races in upcoming seasons.
