About cycling & running in San AntonioSan Antonio Base Miles
Running: Locals run the San Antonio River Walk when they want city miles without overthinking it. The San Antonio River Walk gives you about 14 miles along the San Antonio River, from downtown north toward Brackenridge Park and south toward the Spanish missions. The path below and above the tourist loop gets narrow, but it stays reasonably quiet with no bikes. Leon Creek Greenway works for long Z2, with Grissom and Valero as solid trailheads. SARR covers steady group miles, and Dreamers Run Club, Downtown Run Group, Golden Hour Run Club, and Mission City Running keep the week social. The San Antonio Marathon, San Antonio Half Marathon, and San Antonio 5K are the anchor races.
Cycling: Locals ride a mix of greenway, road, gravel, and Hill Country edges. Scenic Loop runs from Helotes through Grey Forrest, then turns left on Toutant Beauregard for the classic north-side climbing day. The Texas Hill Country reaches into the far northern city, so the climbs live up there. Gravel riders use Huebner Rd to Happys Cor, Venice Ridge to Babcock Rd, Mountain Echo, Rittiman Rd, and those Powerline hills when they want chunky double-track. San Antonio Wheelmen anchor steady club riding with Marion Ride, River Road Ride, Bulverde Ride, Cibolo Ride, and Gruene Latte. San Antonio Cycling Club and 210 Cycle Riders cover no-drop, tempo, and faster group energy.
Season: Spring and fall are the best months for runners and cyclists in San Antonio. Summer gets very hot, long, and humid, so locals start early, keep intervals short, and move base miles into the cooler edges of the day. The Watermelon Dash San Antonio and Edragon SA 5k Summer Series keep runners honest when the heat settles in. Winter stays mild enough for steady Z2, cyclocross-style dirt days, and longer rides, but cool to cold nights change the kit. Subfreezing nights happen about a dozen times per year, and snow, sleet, or freezing rain shows up about once every two or three winters.
