Philadelphia Distance Run

The Philadelphia Distance Run is a half marathon held annually in Philadelphia on the third Sunday of September. Founded by Gene H. Martenson in 1978, the race retained its original name for many years before spending over a decade as part of the Rock 'n' Roll Marathon Series. Local runners now organize the PDR, giving the event a distinct character compared to franchise races, despite its history of hosting significant international competitions. The 13.1-mile road race winds through Philadelphia, and its results feature an unusually strong field for a city half marathon. Lasse Virén, Rod Dixon, Michael Musyoki, Joan Samuelson, Deena Kastor, Mathew Kisorio, and Kim Smith are among those listed in its record book, with multiple world records, American records, and world-best times achieved here. The contemporary PDR also made history by introducing a nonbinary division at the elite level, following advocacy by local organizers such as C.C. Téllez, Lez Run, and Students Run Philly Style.

Philadelphia Marathon Weekend

Philadelphia Marathon Weekend is a late-November running weekend in Philadelphia, with the full marathon on the third Sunday of the month and the shorter races on Saturday. The main race is the AACR Philadelphia Marathon, a certified 42.195 km marathon and one of the larger marathons in the United States, with more than 10,000 marathon finishers and more than 30,000 people entering the weekend’s seven events. The weekend also includes the Dietz & Watson Philadelphia Half Marathon, the Rothman Orthopaedic 8K, and several two-day challenges for runners who want to stack more than one race. The race grew out of earlier Philadelphia-area marathons, including suburban versions and races under different names, before the modern city-run Philadelphia Marathon was set up with just over 1,500 runners. The Rothman 8K began as a smaller add-on backed by local runners and Dr. Peter Sharkey of the Rothman Institute, and it now draws about 3,000 runners. The half marathon later joined the program, and the weekend split into its current Saturday-and-Sunday format. More than 60,000 spectators line the event, while over 3,000 volunteers from schools, colleges, universities, and local groups run cheer zones, replenishment stations, and course support.

About cycling & running in Philadelphia

Philadelphia-Camden-Wilmington Training Notes

Running: Locals stack base miles on Kelly Drive, MLK/Kelly Drive, the SRT, and the Delaware River Trail. You can run 4 miles out and back on Kelly Drive. Thursday regulars switch between Lemon Hill repeats and eight 1/4 mile intervals on the Kelly Drive path. Center City crews also have PR Center City, PR Manayunk, PR University City, Team Philly Race Training, Philadelphia Runner Track Club, Benny Bridge Crew, and Black Girls Run! Philadelphia. Philadelphia Marathon, Philadelphia Distance Run, and Marlton Mayor's Cup 5K anchor the calendar.

Cycling: Locals ride MLK/Kelly Drive to Ridge, Main Street Manayunk, Leverington, Umbria, Shawmont, and the SRT when they want steady Z2 without thinking too hard. Circuit Trails gives the region hundreds of miles of trails where you can get your adventure on. Bicycle Coalition of Philadelphia, Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia, and the Strava club keep riders plugged into routes, group rides, and share stoke. Loop the Delaware! Camden-Palmyra-Philly runs 28 miles and highlights the Delaware River Trail. Port Royal Avenue brings the brutal cobblestone climb, and Hagy's Mill Road, Manor Road, Harts Lane, and Baron Hill Road add the hill work.

Season: Spring and fall feel best for runners and riders because the region has four real seasons and summer can come in warm and so humid. Summer runners move early, and Philly Runners shifts Saturday runs to 8am from Memorial Day to Labor Day. Early Sunday works best for road rides, especially when the plan is base miles before the day gets heavy. Winter keeps both sports honest because snow amounts vary widely year to year. Philly Runners still runs in all weather conditions, and cyclists lean harder on familiar paths, hill loops, and steady routes when daylight gets tight.
