Lake Welch Beach in Stony Point, New York, serves as the base for the HarryMan Triathlon, with the race beginning on Kanawauke Road in Harriman State Park. This annual May event offers Half Long Distance and Olympic-distance triathlons, alongside Aquabike options for those preferring to swim and bike only. The 9:00 a.m. Eastern start time positions it as an early-season challenge. The course is one of the more difficult early-season triathlons in the North East, emphasizing the ability to manage a demanding day over pure speed. The participant count is in the low hundreds, with entries capped across all race categories. Redpoint Productions organizes the event, which is now in its twentieth year.
Big Bear SquaTCh South is a small October trail race at Harriman State Park in Tuxedo, New York, featuring a half marathon and 10K on a lollipop course. Sassquad Trail Running organizes it with the New York-New Jersey Trail Conference, and the name reflects that partnership: the capitalized “TC” in SquaTCh signifies “Trail Conference.” The field is limited to 175 runners and hikers across both distances, and it typically fills before race day. This is mountain running, not a park-path outing: the half marathon gains about 2,200 feet, the 10K gains about 1,200 feet, and both routes use technical singletrack with rocks, roots, steep climbs, steep descents, and one scramble. The half marathon begins with intensity, featuring approximately 1,000 feet of gain in the first 4 miles, and includes two on-course cutoffs within the overall 5-hour limit. The pace requirement is accommodating for strong hikers as well as runners, but the terrain slows the race compared to the distances. A later start facilitates travel from New York City by train to Tuxedo. Registration funds support trail maintenance and protection of the park’s trail system, as well as restoration of the 100-year-old Ramapo-Dunderberg Trail. Within the Big Bear SquaTCh series, this event is presented as the second most challenging, following Big Bear SquaTCh North.
Running: Locals run this corridor like a hill workout with a river view. Fleet Feet and Slow AF Run Club give Poughkeepsie runners a real group-run pulse, and Chester has the Kiwanis Club of Chester Annual 5K. The route covers 31 km and gains +457 m. The second segment runs 19 km with +87 m. Harriman State Park and Lake Welch Beach anchor the MammothMarch Hudson Valley crowd. The Main Street Mile gives Cornwall a sharp summer hit.
Cycling: Riders get plenty of choices between rail-trail Z2, gravel, and proper climbing. GrNY puts the big day on the map with the Minnewaska Gravel Ride from Poughkeepsie. The route covers 6 km and stacks up 1,816 m of gain. The dirt climb to the Awosting Reserve is a challenge, and you will earn your views. Mohonk Preserve and Minnewaska State Park Preserve bring the mixed-surface feel. NYC Cup Finals gives racers the Diamond Mountain Classic Road Race. The race runs 5 km from Poughkeepsie to Hudson.
Season: Spring and fall feel like the best training windows here, even without needing perfect weather. Summer brings fast community racing, because the Main Street Mile sits inside the Cornwall 4th of July celebrations. Locals still keep Z2 steady early, then save intervals for the cooler parts of the day. Winter changes the rhythm for both sports. The typical route here covers 89 km with +93 m. Cyclists move toward steadier paved miles, shorter loops, and careful gravel choices when the surface gets messy.
