The Schneekopflauf begins in Schmiedefeld in the Thuringian Forest, heading uphill toward the Schneekopf. Held in July, it follows a regional cross-country format. The race features two primary mountain-running distances: approximately 12.7 km with about 450 meters of elevation gain, and approximately 22.2 km with about 850 meters of elevation gain. An 11 km hiking option is also available, offering around 400 meters of elevation gain.
This is a steep summit race, not a fast road run, and the organizers emphasize it is not designed for flatland runners. The course connects Schmiedefeld with Großer Finsterberg and the Schneekopf. The challenge comes from sustained climbing as well as the distance. GutsMuths-Rennsteiglaufverein e.V. Schmiedefeld, in conjunction with Rennsteiglauf Sportmanagement & Touristik, organizes the event, which is part of the Sühler Büchsen Cup.
