The Aquathlon de Villeurbanne is a pool-and-run race at the Centre nautique Etienne Gagnaire in Villeurbanne, near Lyon. It uses an Olympic pool for the swim and a running route on a stabilized towpath, giving it an urban, compact feel instead of a lake or sea event. The program includes children’s races from Mini-poussins to Benjamins, an XS team relay, and an S distance for adults and strong juniors. It is approaching its nineteenth edition, organized by ASVEL Triathlon, with past results available for recent editions.
The swim is not a simple lane session: buoys in the pool create an open-water-style course. Race reports describe the XS format as a 500 m swim with tight turns every 100 m and an Australian exit between the diving boards. The S distance has featured a 1000 m swim followed by a 5000 m run. Families, youth racers, relay teams, and individual aquathletes participate on the same day, with distances adapted for younger categories. Specific site rules apply: athletes and accompanying people enter the pool area without shoes, athletes shower with soap before swimming, and a short warm-up is permitted in the basin. The venue is accessible by metro, bus, Vélo’v, or bike rack, with limited car parking by the pool. A refreshment area offers sandwiches, crepes, cakes, and drinks.
