Sobre esta prova
The Bison Marathon and Kresowe Trail races take place in the Białowieża Forest in eastern Poland, with the event village located near the Narewka River beach. Participants can select from the 42 km Maraton Żubra, the 21 km Wertep half marathon, or the 8 km Szpurt, offering a range from a short trail race to a full off-road marathon. This area is one of Europe’s last primeval forests and shelters the world’s largest free-roaming bison herd, with 984 bison recorded there earlier in the year.
The courses traverse the Szczekotowo reserve, skirt the edge of Białowieża National Park, wind through ancient oaks, and utilize the escarpment overlooking the Narewka River. Paths used by the bison themselves are also part of the routes; a runner captured a bison encounter on film during the marathon, confirming the event’s name reflects reality. Following the races, a regional concert and a local food festival are held, featuring the notable potato cake. The Bison Marathon also provides cash prizes in the open category, distributed separately to women and men, alongside age-group awards.
