Genf Marathon

The Geneva Marathon is an annual road-running event in Geneva, Switzerland, taking place each May since 2005. The main event is a full marathon with a six-and-a-half-hour time limit. The program also features a half marathon, relay marathon, 10K, a 20 km handbike and wheelchair race, a women’s race, and children’s races. It attracts approximately 9,100 participants, offering choices for club runners, first-timers, families, and athletes with disabilities. The marathon course is flat by Swiss standards, making it a popular choice for personal-best attempts. The initial section winds through country roads, fields, and vineyards before the route heads back toward Geneva, following Lake Geneva with views of the Alps and Mont Blanc. Runners in longer distances pass Parc La Grange and the Brunswick Monument. The finish on Pont du Mont-Blanc places the Jet d’Eau directly ahead. Ethiopian runners have secured the most men’s and women’s titles, with Kenyan runners also performing well. UNICEF serves as the race beneficiary.

Tour Pédestre du Canton de Genève

The Tour Pédestre du Canton de Genève is a series of small road races held in the Canton of Geneva, Switzerland, taking place over three days in late May and early June. Rather than a single fixed location, the series visits three different communes, with race distances ranging from approximately 8 to 12 km. Specific options include Versoix at 11.5 km and CERN and Choulex, both at 8.9 km. The races are short enough for less experienced runners, yet also offer a quick road effort for club runners. The course descriptions suggest routes through natural areas, alongside lakes and ponds, rather than urban settings. Versoix is noted as the most popular distance. The event's motto, “For the Ge(u)nève(s) and the old ones,” lends a local Geneva character, and the series is presented as an opportunity for runners of all abilities to explore the canton's landscape and history.

Geneva Training Notes

Corrida: Locals run the Lakefront Promenade when they want clean Z2 and a level line along Lake Geneva. The Old Town route starts at Place du Bourg-de-Four and kicks up through cobblestone streets to Cathédrale Saint-Pierre. Parc de la Grange gives you paths, grass, and slight inclines for easy laps. The Rhône River route starts at the Jonction, where the Rhône and Arve meet, then heads upstream away from the bustle. Local runners use the race calendar as the meet-up board. Geneva Urban Trail, Genf Marathon, Course de l'Escalade, Genève, and Tour Pédestre du Canton de Genève anchor the year.

Ciclismo: Locals ride out fast because the city centre sits close to real climbing. Bike Club Switzerland, or BCS, keeps the road scene social with Saturday mornings and Thursday evenings in daylight savings. The Rhone Route gives riders 26km of easy spinning, and the South Jura Route gives 60km of medium work. The Geneva - Mont-Salève route covers 11km, but Salève is the house mountain that matters. Col de la Croisettes climbs straight from the city and averages 10.6 per cent. Les Croisettes sits at 1125m, and the hairpins come quickly. Tour du Léman and Tour de France stage lore keep the gran fondo talk going.

Temporada: May to September gives runners and cyclists the best outdoor block, with late May to early July bringing the good flora. July feels warm, with air temperatures hitting an average high of 24C and lake temperatures reaching 20C, so locals finish runs near Genève Plage or the Bains des Pâquis. July also brings the biggest rainfall because summer thunderstorms can roll in fast. October still works for lake base miles, with 10-15C likely and little snow or ice yet. Winter changes the plan. Light frosts, the Bise, and ice storms near Lac Léman push intervals lower, while the nearby mountains take over for skiing.
