Halle sits on the Saale River in eastern Germany's relatively flat terrain, but the city punches above its weight for cycling—the RTF "Rund um den Petersberg" 153km route draws serious riders into the rolling farmland and modest hills south of the city. For runners, the Herbstwaldlauf Turbine Halle offers a fast 3km cross-country race in autumn, while the Stundenlaufserie provides regular track racing. Gravel cycling is strong here too, with the Bitterfelder Goitzsche Gravelride and Gravelday routes exploring the lakes and former mining terrain to the north.
