Running in the Utica-Rome valley hugs the Mohawk River flats and urban parks—the Boilermaker Road Race, a 15km staple since 1978, runs through downtown Utica on mostly level terrain. Cyclists find more elevation 20-30km south toward the Butternut Valley and Chenango County, where rural roads climb into rolling farmland around 300-400m elevation; the Butternut Valley 5K Trail Run course also doubles as a gravel cycling route through open country.
