The Great Kanku-Breakaways Bolt
Sunday, June 7, 2026 · Coober Pedy, Australia
About this race
From the main lookout in Kanku-Breakaways Conservation Park, this feels like a proper outback trail day rather than a polished road race. The Great Kanku-Breakaways Bolt heads through ancient, multi-coloured breakaway formations on an out-and-back line to Angkata, with the landscape feeling "ancient, dramatic and utterly unlike anywhere else in Australia." It has the character of an "iconic outback event": dirt underfoot, big sky, and very little to hide behind.
The route drops off the hill past the striking Two Dogs formation, then opens onto the surreal "moon plain," a vast, eerily flat expanse of red earth where you run beside the historic dingo fence before turning for home. Expect mostly dirt track and open plain, with the hill section giving the legs something to think about. Walkers, beginners, first-timers and juniors are part of the field, and there is a practical outback quirk too: dogs on leads and prams are allowed, starting from the rear.
