About Marathon races in Thessaloniki

Thessaloniki Training Notes

Thessaloniki hosts 4 Marathon races in 2026 within 80 km of the city centre — upcoming dates, recurring series, and other races nearby, all in one place.

Locals run the waterfront first, especially Nea Paralia, because the coast gives easy Z2 and clean intervals. The route covers 04 km and gains 57 m, so it works when you just need steady base miles. Palios Zoologikos Kipos and Pedion tou Areos add short urban laps, while Mount Chortiatis gives trail races and proper climbing. The climb runs 13 km with 857 m of gain. Kourkourikis training group is the easy local shout, and the International Thessaloniki Night Half Marathon is the big anchor event.

Cyclists here talk routes before clubs or crits, and locals look north and east when they want work. The ride from Thessaloniki to Filyro, 3 Platania road, and Exochi gives 45k with a climb to 600 meters, so it is not fake elevation. Chortiatis is the obvious climbing name, and the route you choose will be beautiful, but hilly. The road towards Polygyros is probably the safest option from the local chatter. Panorama sits near natural paths through the green belt, and Kalamarià keeps the coastal spin close when the legs need Z2.

March through October is the real season, and spring is the sweet spot because cooler days turn the forests green. The Thermaikos coast and the Axios valley feel fast then, so runners can chase road races along the coast and cyclists can stack base miles without drama. August changes the clock, because most days exceed 35C during the day, and locals go early or late. Winter stays usable, but the city gets windy, occasional morning frost shows up, and snow cover usually lasts only a few days, so both sports shift toward shorter sessions and flexible routes.
