Greek running rests on actual ancient routes, not branding. The Athens Authentic Marathon retraces the original course every November (Marathon → Panathenaic Stadium), and the Spartathlon (246km Athens-to-Sparta, every September) is one of the world's hardest ultras. Mountain running is the second pillar — Olympus Marathon, Olympus Ultra and Faethon Sky Race on Mount Olympus, Herkules Mountain Marathon on Mt. Oiti, plus a trail scene across Taygetos, Pelion, the Pindus and Crete's Lefka Ori (White Mountains). Regional roads include the Thessaloniki International Marathon (Alexander the Great), Rhodes, Crete and Olympia Marathons. Cycling is smaller but real — the Hellenic Cycling Federation (ΕΟΠ) road series, UCI Gran Fondo Loutraki, and a fast-growing Peloponnese gravel scene (Megalopolis Gravel Classic, Gravel of Marathon UCI World Series, Jeroboam Kalamata). Triathlon runs through the Hellenic Federation calendar with Triman, XTERRA Greece and the Navarino Challenge. Hot, exposed limestone and sea wind push the prime racing window into spring and autumn.
