About cycling & running in HeraklionHeraklion Training Notes
Running: Locals run the city centre when they want easy base miles, then point toward Párko Geōrgiadē, Merosini fountain, Knossos, Rodia, and Voritsio Mountain when the legs need work. The Knossos loop covers 06 km and gains 361 m, so locals treat it like a proper long day. The Rodia loop covers 24 km and gains 577 m, which makes it good Z2 with bite. Half Marathon Crete, Karteros Run 10km, Crete Half Marathon 2026, and Voritsio Mountain Routes give the calendar its anchor race feel.
Cycling: Locals ride out of Heraklion because the city makes a clean base for coastal spins, inland Z2, and hard climbing days. The Heraklion to Agia Pelagia Coastal Ride runs about 20-30 km, and the Agia Pelagia to Mountain Villages route stretches 30-50 km when the group wants more work. Rogdia climb, Vasilikos climb, Livadi climb, Skinakas climb, Gazi Chonos Anogia, and Gazi Garazo Anogia are where the climbing legs get tested. Heraklion-Zonianá climbs 1,463 m in 44.7 km, while Heraklion-Pánormos climbs 1,911 m in 63.6 km. TOUR OF CRETE is the big anchor event.
Season: Spring gives runners and riders the cleanest rhythm from April to June, and autumn does the same from September to November. Locals use May and October hard on the bike, because most riders are out then and the longer gran fondo style days make sense. Summer brings warm, dry, clear days, so locals ride early morning or at sunset and keep intervals short when the heat bites. Winter stays mild with moderate rain, and the city keeps ticking because Heraklion sits further south than Athens. Rare snow and warmer winter air keep road miles possible, while wet days push trail plans more carefully.
